Afemai

Afenmai, are a group of people living in the Northern part of Edo State of Nigeria and popularly known as Etsakor, Iyekhee or Yekhee people. The Binis identify them as Ivbiosakon people.

In the British colonial era, they were derogatory called Kukuruku, supposedly after a battle cry "ku-ku-ruku", but that term is now desist.

Afemai people occupy six (6) Local Government Areas (LGA) of Edo State:

  1. Etsako West - with Auchi as the headquarters
    Towns: Auchi, South Ibie, Agbede, Awain Community ( Ewora, Eware, Ibvioba, Ama, Idegun), Jattu, Afashio, Ayogwiri, Aviele, Iyorah, Ikabigbo, Afowa, Irekpai, Ugbenor, Idato
  2. Etsako West - with Auchi as the headquarters
    Towns: Auchi, South Ibie, Agbede, Awain Community ( Ewora, Eware, Ibvioba, Ama, Idegun), Jattu, Afashio, Ayogwiri, Aviele, Iyorah, Ikabigbo, Afowa, Irekpai, Ugbenor, Idato
  3. Etsako Central - headquarters is in the town of Fugar
    Towns: Fugar, Ekperi, Ogbona, Anegbette, Udochi
  4. Etsako East - headquarters is in the town of Agenebode
    Towns: Agenebode, Oshiolo, Iviagbapue, Imiakebu, Afana, Imiegba, Itsukwi, Emokweme, Ekwothor, Iviukhua, Okpella, Okpekpe, Iviebua, Ibie, Weppa, Uzanu City
  5. Owan East - headquarters is in the town of Afuze
    Towns: Afuze, Warrake, Igue, Ihievbe, Ikao, Ivbi-Mion, Ive-Ada-Obi, Otuo and Uokha
  6. Owan West - headquarters is in the town of Sabongida Ora
    Towns: Sabongida Ora, Iuleha Clan
  7. Akoko Edo - with Igarra as the headquarters
    Towns: Igarra, Ibillo, Uneme Osu, Uneme Ehrunrun, Ososo, Somorika

These 6 make up the Edo North Senatorial District.

The people are hunters, farmers and fishermen.
